The Local Area
New congress and event panoramas

Varese is an enchanting kaleidoscope of colours: on one hand the greens of the gardens and protected parks embracing the town (with a total surface area of around 85,000 hectares) and, on the other, the blue of the area’s many lakes. It is precisely the harmony and juxtaposition of these two colours which enchants and charms all visitors.

“The garden city”, “land of the seven lakes”, “the Versailles of Milan” (G. Leopardi): these are all names which Varese has merited over the years. Its incomparably beautiful panoramas are accompanied by an important artistic and cultural heritage: the Sacro Monte chapels, the art nouveau buildings which earned the town the title ‘noble town’ in the 19th century (famous architect Sommaruga considered the ‘Prince of Art Nouveau’ was the man behind a great many villas in the area).

And around the town is the enchanting Eremo di Santa Caterina del Sasso, perched over Lake Maggiore, as well as Rocca Borromeo in Angera. These are all places which have inspired the stories and art of writers and painters such as Piero Chiara, Nobel prize winner Dario Fo, Vittorio Sereni, Guido Morselli and Renato Guttuso. In the 19th century Stendhal commented:

“The places I am passing through are of such beauty that my imagination can add not a single line…”

VARESE ECONOMICS BUSINESS CROSSROADS, THE CENTRE OF EUROPE
Its strategic geographic location near Milan and Switzerland makes Varese an important trading and cultural exchange hub. Cradle of Italian industry since the 19th century with the first textile plants, Varese still has one of the highest growth rates in Europe. The great variety of its industrial and artisan products makes the town a manufacturing multi-district. Exports are significant with over 40% of the goods produced sold on markets the world over.
